Phulara Ridge Trek: The Himalayan Trail Where the Ridge Is the Journey
Most Himalayan treks take you to a summit, a lake, a pass, or a famous viewpoint. The Phulara Ridge Trek is different. Here, the trail itself is the main attraction. Instead of walking toward one final point, you spend a long stretch walking along a high ridge with open mountain views on both sides.
Located in the Sankri region of Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, Phulara Ridge is known for its wide meadows, forest trails, high-altitude landscapes, and long ridge walk. The trek reaches around 12,000 feet and is generally considered an easy to moderate to moderate trek, depending on the route and weather conditions.
The usual route starts from Sankri and takes trekkers through forest sections, open meadows, Bhoj Gadi, Phulara Ridge, and Pushtara Bugyal before returning through Taluka. A standard trip takes around six days, including the drive between Dehradun and Sankri.
What Makes Phulara Ridge Trek Different?
The biggest reason to choose this trek is the ridge walk.
On many Himalayan treks, a ridge may appear for a short section before the trail goes down or enters a forest. At Phulara, the ridge becomes the main experience. After climbing from Bhoj Gadi, you reach the high ridge and walk across an open section with mountain views spreading in different directions.
On a clear day, you can see several Himalayan peaks and ranges from the trail, including views toward Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini, Kedarkantha and other surrounding peaks.
The landscape also changes during the trek. You begin among tall trees and slowly move toward open grasslands and high mountain terrain. This change makes the trek interesting because every day feels different.
Where Does the Phulara Ridge Trek Start?
The trek usually starts from Sankri, a small mountain village in Uttarkashi district. Sankri is also the base for several other treks in this part of Uttarakhand.
The journey from Dehradun to Sankri is long, usually taking around 8–10 hours depending on road and weather conditions. The drive passes through mountain towns and villages before reaching the forested region around Sankri.
Sankri sits at roughly 6,400 feet, so the first part of the trek involves a steady increase in altitude. This is one reason it is important not to rush the trail.
Phulara Ridge Trek Itinerary
A typical phulara ridge trek itinerary takes six days. The exact camps and distances can change slightly depending on the route, weather, and local trail conditions.
Day 1: Dehradun to Sankri
Day 2: Sankri to Juda Ka Talab or Sikolta
There are different versions of the route. One common route goes from Sankri toward Juda Ka Talab and then continues toward the higher camps. Another route uses Sikolta as the first campsite.
The trail moves through dense forest with pine, oak, and other Himalayan trees. The climb is steady but manageable for trekkers with basic fitness.
Day 3: Juda Ka Talab or Sikolta to Bhoj Gadi
Bhoj Gadi is located at around 11,000 feet, making this an important day for altitude gain. Depending on the route, the walk can take around 4-5 hours.
The views also start opening up, giving you a better idea of what the next day will bring.
Day 4: Bhoj Gadi to Pushtara via Phulara Ridge
This is the main day of the trek.
You leave Bhoj Gadi and climb toward the ridge. The highest point is around 12,000-12,150 feet, depending on the route and recorded elevation.
Once you reach the ridge, the character of the trek changes. Instead of walking through a narrow forest trail, you get a more open landscape with views across valleys and mountains.
After spending time on the ridge, the trail descends toward Pushtara Bugyal. This day is usually around 6-7 hours of trekking.
Day 5: Pushtara to Taluka and Drive to Sankri
The fifth day is mostly a descent.
You leave the open meadows behind and enter the forest again. The trail eventually reaches Taluka, from where you travel back to Sankri by road.
The combination of downhill walking and the drive makes this a quieter day after the main ridge section.
Day 6: Sankri to Dehradun
After breakfast, you leave Sankri and drive back to Dehradun.
The journey can again take around 8-10 hours, so it is better to keep some extra time in your travel plan in case road or weather conditions cause delays.
How Difficult Is the Phulara Ridge Trek?
The main challenges are the altitude, long walking days, uphill sections, and the descent from the high meadows. The ridge section can also be windy and exposed, especially when the weather changes.
You should be comfortable walking for several hours on uneven mountain trails before starting the trek.
Regular walking, stair climbing, jogging, and basic strength training can help you prepare. It is also important to carry enough water and follow a slow pace at higher elevations.
Best Time to Visit Phulara Ridge
The trek is usually done during the spring, summer, autumn, and early winter periods, depending on trail and weather conditions. May and June offer green landscapes and pleasant trekking conditions, while autumn can bring clearer mountain views.
September and October can also be good months because the monsoon period has usually passed and the skies can become clearer.
Winter conditions can change the experience completely. Snow and cold temperatures may make sections of the trail more difficult, so current weather and trail conditions should always be checked before starting.
What Should You Carry?
You do not need an oversized backpack, but you should carry the right equipment.
Important things include:
- Good trekking shoes with proper grip
- Warm layers and a waterproof jacket
- Thermal innerwear during colder months
- Gloves, woollen socks, and a warm cap
- Water bottles or a hydration system
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Headlamp with extra batteries
- Personal medicines and a basic first-aid kit
- Trekking poles if you prefer extra support
- A small daypack for daily walking
Weather in the mountains can change quickly, so warm and waterproof layers are useful even when the weather looks clear at the start.
Phulara Ridge Trek Package: What to Check
If you are planning to book a phulara ridge trek package, do not look only at the price.
Check what the package actually includes. A proper package may include accommodation, meals during the trek, camping equipment, trek support, permits, and transportation for certain sections. However, inclusions vary between packages, so you should always read the details before booking.
Also check whether transportation from Dehradun to Sankri and the return journey are included. Some packages cover only the trekking section, while others include the complete journey.
It is also useful to check the group size, accommodation at Sankri, safety arrangements, guide support, equipment, and cancellation terms.
Is Phulara Ridge Trek Worth Exploring?
Phulara Ridge is a good option for trekkers who want something different from a summit-focused trek.
The attraction is not just reaching the highest point. It is the experience of walking across a high Himalayan ridge, moving from dense forests to open meadows, and watching the landscape change throughout the journey.
The trail combines several things that make a Himalayan trek memorable: forests, grasslands, mountain views, campsites, altitude, and a long open ridge walk.
If you want a trek where the journey itself is the main highlight, the Phulara Ridge Trek deserves a place on your Uttarakhand trekking list.
